Have you noticed that most marketing and advertising for diet and weight loss products seem to be for women? Are there are more overweight women than men? The numbers are close for obese men and women, at least in the US. Here are some quick statistics:
|Obese Women||Obese Men|
|2010 – 35.8%||2010 – 35.5%|
|2012 – 36.1%||2012 – 33.5%|
From the National Health and Nutrition Examination | Reported by USA Today – Oct 2013

Admittedly, most ads for Garcinia Cambogia can be misleading if you’re a man searching for a no-joke weight loss product that works. It begs the obvious question that maybe you’ve silently asked…
Does garcinia cambogia work for men?
What is HCA and Why Should You Care?
The primary active substance in garcinia cambogia is Hydroxycitric acid, or HCA. It naturally occurs in the rind of the garcinia fruit. You’ll notice HCA mentioned throughout ads for garcinia-based products. It is the workhorse behind all the claims and benefits.
How does HCA interfere with or reduce fat production? Is it a “fat blocker”? (Advertising slang alert!)
HCA has been shown to inhibit the creation of an enzyme, alpha-amylase. This enzyme is produced by the pancreas. But it doesn’t stop there. An enzyme made in the intestines, alpha-glucosidase, is also inhibited by HCA. OK – that’s great but so what.
HCA’s action on those two enzymes results in a reduction in carbohydrate metabolism (fat creation). One important point is how much reduction that occurs depends on dosage, what you eat, and when the garcinia extract is taken relative to meals. This will be explained in a moment.
So does garcinia cambogia work for men? The action of HCA on those two enzymes takes place in both men and women.
Moods, Emotional Eating and Serotonin
Another often-cited benefit of garcinia is it can boost or elevate moods. The reason for this is serotonin levels increase as a result of taking garcinia.
Well, what is serotonin?
Serotonin is a brain chemical derived from tryptophan, an essential amino acid, and has a role in the following: depression, pain, aggression, anxiety, appetite and more. A tremendous amount of research has been done on serotonin for decades.
Garcinia works the same for men and women with regard to serotonin production, levels and what affects it. The effect of serotonin on mood is identical for men and women, as well.
Garcinia dosage will determine how much serotonin levels increase. This has been shown in human testing and animal research. Human testing was reported in a patent application in 2003 with dosages of 2800 mg HCA a day divided in 3 equal dosages. 1
Note: A dosage of 2800 mg HCA required 4,667 mg of garcinia cambogia extract.
Blood serum serotonin increased by almost 50% in the group receiving HCA, only. One group received a placebo and the other received HCA and other supplement extracts.
Serotonin levels increased almost 70% in subjects taking HCA, chromium and gymnemic acid.
What’s with Conflicting Results?
This clinical testing is significant because there are reports of conflicting results with garcinia users. These conflicting results may be caused by low dosage supplements; the amount of HCA is actually less, poor quality extract, other supplements competing with the HCA or other unknown factors.
A similar situation exists with appetite suppression and conflicting results. Research has shown that the degree of appetite suppression experienced depends on when garcinia is taken prior to meals.
The bioavailability of HCA is significantly higher when garcinia extract is taken 30 to 60 minutes before eating. “A time-dependent uptake of [3H]-5-HT occurred in cortical slices reaching a maximum at 60 min.” 2
[3H]-5-HT refers to serotonin which other research has established a link between serotonin levels and appetite control and overall eating behavior.
Additionally, a Purdue University study reported a 400 mg dose of HCA, 30-60 minutes before eating, led to 6.8-8.1 pounds lost over 12 weeks.
There were no mentions of gender differences in any research cited. Takeaway: garcinia cambogia has the same effects for men and women with appetite suppression.
Reasons Why (Some) Men Should Take Garcinia Cambogia
Men should take garcinia cambogia for the same reasons women take it – to lose weight. One thing often mentioned about garcinia is there are no studies on long-term usage. You should consider taking a break after roughly 3 months of usage just to be safe.
Another study at Georgetown University (US) saw a 5.4% decrease in weight over an 8 week period. Perhaps that’s not quite as impressive as some marketing and advertising claims seen around the web want you to believe.
But here’s something to think about.
Normal and safe weight loss is not dramatic unless it includes water loss or is caused by a medical condition. As you know, weight lost due to water loss returns with a vengeance. That kind of weight loss is only temporary.
Losing almost 5.5% body weight is realistic. But let’s look at some numbers, shall we?
And that’s with doing nothing special other than taking the garcinia extract, in general.
Now stop and think how much more you can lose if you add a little extra effort. What about eating less unhealthy and fattening snacks and drinking fewer soft drinks? How about doing a little exercise?
Once you get motivated by seeing and experiencing some results, greater forward momentum happens and you become more confident.
Goals not Well-Suited for Garcinia Extract – Just Being Honest
No product is for all people and that is true for garcinia extract. One broad category that fits that bill is weight lifting. Whether you’re a body builder or competitive weight lifter, garcinia is not the best fit.
There are supplements and strategies designed especially for lifters that are more appropriate and should be used.
Wrapping it Up – Concluding Thoughts
By now there should be no doubts in your mind that garcinia cambogia works for men who want to slim down, lose weight and generally improve their physical appearance.
You can achieve your weight loss goals when you put your mind to it and get a little help. Garcinia extract can help you and it’s backed-up by research.
There is a way to leverage your efforts with garcinia extract plus raspberry ketones. RK works in a different way and in-concert with garcinia by directly affecting a hormone called, adiponectin.
Adiponectin is a protein hormone and is essential for breaking down fatty acids and assisting in regulating blood sugar (glucose) levels. Research on this hormone has shown that adiponectin levels have a unique relationship with a person’s percentage or amount of fat.
A person with high body fat has less adiponectin, and people with normal weight (less fat) have high levels of adiponectin. A University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine (US) study demonstrated the hormone’s ability to increase metabolism with no effect on appetite. In other words, there was no increase in appetite.
Garcinia Extra contains garcinia cambogia plus raspberry ketones for safe, natural weight loss.
